Posting has been disabled except for members and staff to prevent spam by anonymous guests.
- Please try to keep posts on topic, stay polite and ignore trolls, no swearing, foul language or the use of *'s to suggest it.
- Try to reply to other people's comments instead of starting new threads.
- Read other people's messages before posting your own to avoid simply duplicating what has already been said.
- Use a clear subject that describes what your message is about.
- When replying, quote the message you're replying to. It makes discussion easier to follow now that sub-threads are harder to see.
- No top-posting. If you quote someone, add your input after the text you quote.
- Trim your posts. Leave on your quote only the parts that are relevant to your reply
- Necros are allowed so long as the new post is on topic and the old post is not more than several months old.
- Your IP address will be recorded, but NOT made public. We reserve the right to edit or delete inappropriate contributions.
- All posts are the property of their respective owners.

Since this is a forum and not a blog, I believe that we should have some additional rules, with regard to quoting other's posts. I'm an old hand at message boards and internet forums, and here are some of the rules that I've learned over the years:
-When replying, quote the message you're replying to. It makes discussion easier to follow now that sub-threads are harder to see. -No top-posting. If you quote someone, add your input after the text you quote. -Trim your posts. Leave on your quote only the parts that are relevant to your reply

What about zombie threads? should we disallow posting to a thread after it has been dead for some period of time?

What about zombie threads? should we disallow posting to a thread after it has been dead for some period of time? That's a hard question to answer. On one hand thread necromancy is a vile act, but on the other hand, continuously replicating threads that deal with the same issue over and over, because to open the old thread would be thread necromancy as it has been left to fallow for X+1 or more days (where X is the arbitrary thread expiration age) is probably worse. I would say that it should be dealt on a case by case basis. If the new poster raises the thread by continuing the discussion, and manages to restart it, then maybe it should be allowed to live again.

Kuroshima, I agree with the quote parts, so I'll edit the OP.
I also agree with UK that we have to handle necros a bit differently than other forums since we are going for a Groklaw type style.
So I think we should say something like "necros are allowed so long as the post is on topic."

Are we going to set a default licence for the posts people make ? If all posts are made under something like a Creative Commons License then they can be quoted freely elsewhere - PJ used one( by-nc-nd)for her own posts on Groklaw.

Let's do this the same way it was done on Groklaw: everyone owns their own post. However, they give us the right to edit or remove inappropriate posts.
