Nice job. I'll try and set this as the default theme.

Hmm, that's tough.
Be a shame to lose out on the notes.

Are we going to set a default licence for the posts people make ? If all posts are made under something like a Creative Commons License then they can be quoted freely elsewhere - PJ used one( by-nc-nd)for her own posts on Groklaw. Totally forgot about that. Let's do this the same way it was done on Groklaw: everyone owns their own post. However, they give us the right to edit or remove inappropriate posts.

Hmm, if the forums get removed, we will lose all the comments.
I think they are archived in the LoC.
My opinion is that nothing will happen for a little while until everyone is sure that Groklaw is done for sure.
I'm thinking of emailing MW and asking for his opinion on what we should do and just let him know that we are here now.

My experience is that message boards require a critical mass of comments before they are self sustaining. Groklaw didn't have any such requirement because it lived and breathed on PJ's and collaborators' articles, and the newspicks were another source of new activity. For those new to message boards, having new thread pop up in bursts is healthy. A nascent forum is a fragile thing, and it's VERY VERY easy for it to be stillborn, never reaching critical mass. I agree totally. We could easily have someone come up with a better way to organize the community and we would all migrate there. I think it's probably too soon to start archiving Groklaw, but not too soon to start looking into how to do it. This forum has the ability to have static pages, so we could archive some of it on another site or something. Google Docs might also be helpful. As a side note, I have removed the ability for moderators to restructure the forums for now, as I realized that having nearly 20 people trying to make boards and sections was going to be... chaotic. I have added a few people to the Curator group, which grants this ability. Anyone who wants it should PM me and I'll give it to you.

Hey everyone.
If you noticed over the past day or so, the layout on this site has changed somewhat.
I've removed some of the real "forumy" features like stars and avatars, because I am going for a Groklaw feel.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions?
Any of you familiar with the layout formats on this type of forum?

I was thinking Google Docs, not a bad idea.

Yes, no politics allowed.
However, a lot of what we discuss has political relationships.
Therefore, I would like to suggest the following rule of thumb: Once political parties are being mentioned, it is time to stop.

If you guys have a better way of doing this, please let me know. Doing transcriptions on a forum is going to be particularly awkward.

Kuroshima, I agree with the quote parts, so I'll edit the OP.
I also agree with UK that we have to handle necros a bit differently than other forums since we are going for a Groklaw type style.
So I think we should say something like "necros are allowed so long as the post is on topic."

I notice the wikipedia article was edited to link to this site.
Great.
If you need anything or have any questions, just PM me.
I have accepted 12 of you for staff. If you can tell me your groklaw username (and I can verify it), then I'll add you on the moderator staff.

Posting has been disabled except for members and staff to prevent spam by anonymous guests.
- Please try to keep posts on topic, stay polite and ignore trolls, no swearing, foul language or the use of *'s to suggest it.
- Try to reply to other people's comments instead of starting new threads.
- Read other people's messages before posting your own to avoid simply duplicating what has already been said.
- Use a clear subject that describes what your message is about.
- When replying, quote the message you're replying to. It makes discussion easier to follow now that sub-threads are harder to see.
- No top-posting. If you quote someone, add your input after the text you quote.
- Trim your posts. Leave on your quote only the parts that are relevant to your reply
- Necros are allowed so long as the new post is on topic and the old post is not more than several months old.
- Your IP address will be recorded, but NOT made public. We reserve the right to edit or delete inappropriate contributions.
- All posts are the property of their respective owners.

This will definitely take some getting used to, but at least we can all talk.
I'm going to try and make this as much like Groklaw as possible, I'm even allowing nonmembers to post to a degree.
If any of you have more experience with this, please let me know.
I'll open up the newspicks forum so we can talk about the news.
