Do you think that Sherlock Home's would put his trust in the new unproven Victorian Speaking Bone? He would have known that Strowger invented the Strowger switch because the local telephone operators, one of whom was the wife of a competitor was redirecting call calls to her husband. Why would he trust a modern contrivance that every Jane, Sarah and Mary Lou could ear wig on? Any way. The GPO has often confirmed that they have no record of Sherlock Home's address at 221B Baker Street London ever having had a telephone installed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strowger_switch

It might help to take a step back and ask what do we mean by a computer. Originally computers where humans that performed calculations. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_computerThen we had en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tide-predicting_machineand the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MONIAC_ComputerThey could do nothing other than what they where designed for. Ie they were single purpose computers. When the 4 bit Microprocessor was developed, shades of grey crept in. Some you could program – others you couldn't. Example: Ken Shirriff has reversed engineered Sinclair's amazing 1974 calculator. files.righto.com/calculator/sinclair_scientific_simulator.htmlIt clearly shows how the program was hard wired in. One can't run Linux on it. It is a dedicated single purpose computer. If you look under your hood (bonnet in the UK) you'll find a little widget that tells your spark plugs when to spark. Some can be reconfigured to improve performance (which I think is mechanic speak for increasing atmospheric pollution) but you can't load Linux nor windows on them either. They are 'dedicated' single purpose computers. Then we come to the next grey area of digital video recorders. Which are thought of as 'dedicated' single purpose machines... to all but the smart aleck ten year old that whips off the cover, attaches a few crocodile clips here and there, instals Ubantu and proceeds to do is homework assignment on it! So much over laps, that the difference between a single purpose and general purpose computer is in the eye of the beholder and (let us not forget) the communal garden troll.

Verily. Prey tell thee anyone. How can the NSA wire tap a tin-can-telephone without you or one's correspondent being aware of it? The string might get a bit soggy on transatlantic calls but the principle stands head and shoulders above most modern contrivances.

Whist much has been made of Elop's tenure at Nokia not much has been said about how it went from top-dog into the terrible mess it now finds itself in. Would Boos Allen hire an engineer as a CEO ? Or Deloite's hire engineer as a CEO? Then why oh why hire a Lawyer (wash my mouth out with soap) to head up Nokia. What happened to Sutor, ne ultra crepidam? Kallasvuo (the previous Nokia CEO) being a lawyer, he must have heard M$ diatribe against Linux (maybe straight from the horses mouth at Redmond – after all he was a very important CEO). The biggest software marketing company in the world with the best lawyers, letting it be know the SCO is the rightful owner of Linux. So as soon as the courts recognize this obvious fact then all the mobile phone manufactures will be facing an unknown royalty claim for every phone they have sold. One can just imagine a M$ Executive asking him: “and then how will you face your shareholders at the next AGM when they demand to know how you as a lawyer allowed Nokia to sell billions of phones loaded with stolen IP instead of the only legal alternative to Apple?!!!”Android and Meego probable never stood a chance. Mikko-Pekka Heikkinen conducted some interviews with Nokia staff a while back. It covers aspect the the current press have not gone into. Yet it points to how the rot started. Here it is in 4 parts (Please don't confuse Jorma Ollila with Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo )Knock, Knock, Nokia's Heavy Fall... Some might not be familiar with Scandinavian working practices. There is more of a close team effort than in most other countries. So for background I have included the changes that helped make Nokia the number one mobile phone company under Jorma Ollila before its sad decline under Kallasvuo. As it is often said that Great Britain and the US are 'two nations separated by a common language' I think I should add that “promenaded” means: “a leisurely walk taken for pleasure, to display one's finery, etc.”. www.yourdictionary.com/promenadedNAS also has no way of wire taping the telephones of Sherlock Holmes's era. If you want max security without resorting to encryption, this article gives the basics.... and the there is never any need to recharge – ever. No carrier fees, no software up dating etc. Always on 24/7. Total privacy! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin_can_telephone

Not quite. This young lady promenaded about with a Vertu Constellation Quest. A mere Blackberry running Symbian. www.sherlockology.com/props/irenes-mobile-phone"You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear." ;-) Sherlock Holmes A Scandal in Bohemia

We do have a choice if we want a Lumia 920 pre-loaded with Android. They have been on sale since February. Mind-you, they costs a bit more that an iPhone, so alas, I will not be getting one this side of Christmas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertu_Ti

Cm's right but when he said 'allies' I think he meant with the exception of the US as the NSA already knew all about Colossus. See, the section titled “The American information” just over half way down the page. www.codesandciphers.org.uk/lorenz/rebuild.htmAs for the techniques developed at BP for braking codes... Alan Turing himself told them. www.turing.org.uk/scrapbook/ukusa.htmlHowever, the NSA went for the specially designed ENIAC as a computer of choice.

If I had the time, I would start a Wikipedia article of all the companies that have come to grief after being infiltrated by M$.
The bulk of shareholders of companies that are also in microsoft's sights are unlikely to beware of their modus operandi. So, they might find such an article interesting too.

The full version of the video is here, but unfortunately they didn't included subtitles in American English, so you may not be able to follow it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWU6tVxzO1I
