That was me approving it (hoping I'm not rocking any boats by so doing).

I am the same nsomos as from Groklaw. PJ had some privacy through the fact that there are a multiplicity of Pamela Joneses in the world. In my case there are so few Somoses that it is impossible for me to be effectively anonymous with my real name. In any case the email address I have posted on my Groklaw account visible to Groklaw account members logged in at www.groklaw.net/users.php?mode=profile&uid=8120is clearly related to the email address I used to register here. Indeed you could email that address and I would in time respond.

Thanks for quoting my biggest concern Gringo ... and hopefully the discussions will continue here or elsewhere.
It'll be a sore loss not having PJ's insight and the discussions she's had with various legal entities but hopefully some of the more knowledgeable crew will turn up here...

Great site. Glad someone has picked up the torch. However, although this site is good for short term, it probably will not work for long term. Asking for Birthdays on log in is not really on. Also this is Californian based and is subject to the intrusions PJ is so worried about. I suggest we move to a VM, probably hosted in Switzerland, where we can develop a site (using geeklog?) with our own policies and privacy as assured as it can be in this world.
I am prepared to contribute financially to this, as well as technically (I am a Linux developer and administrator by profession).
In the meantime, I will keep on visiting here.
Thoughts anyone?

I think your idea about moving the site to a neutral country is interesting. I wonder whether it would make a difference, though...if a majority of members are located in the US (seems likely), then the server location is somewhat moot.

But for the minority who are not US members it would give some privacy which appears to be lacking from the "Land of the free" where the privacy laws appear largely to be against the private citizen (unlike the EU where they are for the private citizen).
As an EU citizen, the data protection laws mean my private data cannot legally be exported [without my consent]; I would fee much happier signing up if the server was ex-USA - I cannot trust any US server with my private data. (I am now getting spam on an email address I only ever gave to my bank (all phishing for bank account details for banks I don't use): I suspect they have "Microsoft Machines" there that have been compromised, along with the compromised Microsoft machines [owned (sic) by others] sending the spam.)

The only reasons I have against it are because (1) we've already been asking people to come here from Groklaw.net so it could be confusing if there is another new site and (2) some people who have already gotten accounts here may not want to pack up and 'move' again. Hoewever, if it is a big enough deal to everyone, then we can certainly discuss alternatives.

Cm, what I was getting at is that based on what we know now, any communications involving computers in the US are likely monitored, which means that the username, password, and email address I entered to sign up here is probably known to the US government (or easily could be). That consequently means that that same government could access this site as me.
Extending this out to its logical conclusion, in order to protect users that are not US citizens, we would have to have one site for non-US citizens hosted outside the US and another for US citizens, just in order to lessen the chance that information would cross that boundary.
However...the bigger problem is that some other non-US countries have even more invasive monitoring (the UK, for example). This is the reason that PJ is trying to leave the internet. There is no safe haven. Everyone is connected to so many internet sites that they are likely already completely compromised, in terms of sending and receiving unencrypted communications.
All of that I agree with PJ on, and I find disturbing. What we *can't* do is to let that be a balkanzizing force.
We're not trying to be the next wikileaks (at least I wasn't expecting to participate in something like that, and wouldn't want to). I think we can reasonably discuss technology, law, and advocacy for the rights of individuals with respect to the same without verging into territory where we're sharing things about ourselves that we don't want the world to know.
Groklaw was a very public site, and PJ made a very personal decision...two different things, IMHO.

I have a server in Canada, with free space. That might not be as good as some other countries, but would make it harder on the NSA. Interested? Wayne madhatter.ca
