Even if Groklaw itself lasts a few years of forever its never a bad idea to have backups or a backup site online in case the data or the one site they are on is lost through no human fault. Servers and hard drives die, natural disasters happen like earthquakes and hurricanes, they can take out one data center. As long as the copyrights would allow mirroring or re-posting of the information it is perhaps a great idea to have them in more than one place on the internet. It would also make it easier for someone looking for the information to find it.

OK, we need to get organized. I've just ran sitesucker on Groklaw. It didn't give me a full dump. Does anyone have a better site downloader, or could you just try everything you can think of. We need that detail. Also Techrights has a Comes section, we should grab Ray's stuff, and compare with what has been done. techrights.org/wiki/index.php/Comes_vs_MicrosoftWayne madhatter.ca

Looks like everyone posting on Groklaw thinking that the site would be saved for the future was fooled. The comments are now closed on all articles so the site is as good as dead. Since it isn't being saved its only a matter of time before it vanishes for good. Those doing Comes documents are apparently wasting their time.

Create an account and contribute to the cause as opposed to whining about it. I have been doing Comes transcriptions and PJ acknowledges my contributions. Have you helped to finished this project?

This little gem is the best thing I've seen so far. Why? Because it is proof that someone/something doesn't want the Groklaw idea to continue. Among the things they really don't want us doing is digging further into the COMES documents. And if someone doesn't want me to so something, that means that it is exactly what I should be doing, and twice as hard. Consider it a compliment - we've got someone messing their pants. Let's keep it up. Wayne madhatter.ca

Let's keep it up. Wayne madhatter.caI think you should seriously consider reality when making statements. Groklaw is dead. PJ killed it. New articles are not being published. Comments are now disabled. News picks are old. The idea that someone is trying to stop you from doing Comes documents because of what they are is in the tin foil hat realm. I am only pointing out the futility of doing anything else for PJ, Comes articles just happen to be the only thing being done right now. But if PJ wants other things done I would advise against it unless Groklaw reopens with a community based governance. Groklaw was/is a community and what PJ did in closing it down was wrong. If you do continue to do Comes I wouldnt send it to PJ, post it here, at least this site is active. Groklaw is not going to be included in the library of congress unless PJ gives permission to copy it. But that may not be possible. How exactly is she going to give permission for all the posts? They are copyrighted and property by the posters by statements on the site itself. As are the Comes articles everyone is doing. Do Comes articles all you want. But the reality is PJ has killed Groklaw. There is no guarantee that the site will remain up now that it is no longer active. Dead sites vanish all the time on the internet. So if you want to continue to do things for a dead site in the hopes that a hosting provider who isn't getting paid will continue to host your work, go for it. I wont contribute to Groklaw anymore.

I wont contribute to Groklaw anymore. So says the AC. I'm not going to repeat the rest of that rant. But it's obvious now that the haters can't bug PJ anymore, they need someone to rant to. Or maybe they just want to kill this site while it's still-a-borning. But, he/she/they have a point, any new COMES should be posted here as well as sent to PJ. I'm waiting on PJs ok before downloading the COMES from Groklaw for posting here. She's placed a robots no archive, no follow flag on the whole collection.

So, has anyone decided where to put COMES documents, besides sending to PJ to be posted on Groklaw?
Near as I can tell the exhibits, remarkably by order of the Iowa Judge, now appear to be PD. It's legal to copy the PDFs and post them on a website.
The transcribed documents on Groklaw, I'm still not certain about. There is no copyright notice except PJs, which is CC-BY-NC-ND*. These aren't user comments. Some were transcribed by PJ. Others by users. PJ, is apparently mad at me and isn't replying to my email (a misunderstanding of an email I'd sent to her). But again she has set in the headers of the page, no-cache, no-follow, no-index.
Based on this I conclude, the transcripts are a PJ article, but I'm no lawyer. Certainly we can save off all the PDFs, and any text version someone creates and shares here. I've only done one or two COMES myself.
Anyway, what came of the idea to do a Google Docs? Again this seems to be a failing of using a forum site. Still, I'd think it shouldn't be hard to create a folder(s) for the docs, and turn off commenting. They'd be searchable, but to have the links to originals mean hosting them here also somehow.
*Of course I see problem here. The ND means no-derivative. That would imply(?) posting the COMES transcriptions in the exact form they are in now? Ugh, copyright law is so broken when it comes to the Internet.
