Loved it. Outlining is a hugely valuable tool, and this was a great explanation of the technique. Although I do have to point out that if somebody hasn't read/seen "The Lord of the Rings" (admittedly a vanishingly small percentage of your target audience) it loses quite a bit of its effectiveness...

Loved it. Outlining is a hugely valuable tool, and this was a great explanation of the technique. Although I do have to point out that if somebody hasn't read/seen "The Lord of the Rings" (admittedly a vanishingly small percentage of your target audience) it loses quite a bit of its effectiveness... Didn't matter what example I used, someone wouldn't have been familiar with it. There are people who are convinced that Harry Potter leads to witchcraft, that it is wrong to portray talking animals, that TV is evil, that... So I used an example that is fairly widely known. That's the best I could do. Wayne madhatter.ca

Oh, I agree, don't get me wrong. In fact I actually tried to come up with an example of material that would be as recognizable as yours, and the only thing that came close was Star Wars. I discounted that one as it's getting a bit dated now, and I think that LotR is a better choice. Besides, your explanation is being written to WRITERS, and the percentage of your intended audience that wouldn't get the LotR references is - well, needles and haystacks come to mind.
I loved your explanation, very good work.
