Does the phrase "Open Data" ring a bell? Like open source and open standards, you should want data to be open as well, at least where it's been created by governments.

The more available the data, the greater the benefits. With some caveats. I wouldn't want the government publicly publishing my Social Insurance Number Wayne madhatter.ca

Some datasets that government produces should not be open because the dataset should never have been created in the first place.
I've used some great government data - from USGS, FDA, NASA, NOAA - and it would be really nice if those were the norm, not the exceptions.
